About a year ago I started noticing advertisements for a tooth whitening product, Malibu Bright. Whenever I would go on YouTube to find a tutorial for makeup or a hairstyle I was coveting, this product review video kept popping up. At first, I was annoyed. I mean, I have always had healthy teeth, no cavities, lucky me! It’s one of the few aspects of health and beauty I didn’t think I had to worry about. I never am satisfied with my hair color or style so I am forever fretting about new ways to cut and dye my naturally mousy brown mop, LOL. But, then, the more I watched television and movies I definitely began to realize how super-white most peoples’ teeth looked. And not just Angelina and Brad beautiful level celebrities, but everyone in commercials, on reality TV and even a few of my more well put together friends were flashing gorgeous smiles. And so, inevitably, I was feeling self-conscious about my somewhat yellow teeth.
The truth is, I don’t drink much coffee or tea, but I do love my red wine, LOL. Going out with my girlfriends after a long, (boring, hello!) week at work and relaxing with a glass of wine watching a fun movie or at a local bar scoping out hot guys relaxes me and makes me happy. If my teeth are slightly less than stellar, I would blame the Merlot and Pinot Noir. But they never were, like completely grotesque or anything. Even so, I really want to look my best right now, since I have been in between boyfriends and really wanted to find someone before my thirtieth birthday. That’s when I started paying more attention to Malibu Bright, as well as some of the other whitening strips and stuff you see all the time on TV. The product review sites were a natural progression for me, since I am kind of a fashion/beauty blog nut and always following the latest in trends.
I was definitely skeptical. I figured I could just go for some of the whitening gel I saw at my favorite drug stores (Hello, Tar-Szhay!). But, since I am a thorough research person when it comes to this stuff – despite my brother always calling me an airhead – I got kind of addicted to watching the video. And the more I watched, the more sense it made.

First thing, I have to mention, the actor? or doctor or whoever is SEXY. Sorry. Just sayin. I also immediately liked the clean look of the product. I consider myself to be a visual person and I like my beauty products to look elegant like something from Sephora, simple and pretty packaging. I think that alone kind of sold me. Seems like it really gets in between your teeth to get out all the gross food particles and stuff in there. Gross, but necessary, especially if you are going right out on a date or with your friends after work! I want to look and feel my best, then and always!

A friend of mine went to the dentist for whitening and her teeth looked the same as they did before the whitening treatment in a month or so. I am a savvy shopper and so this made me feel an aha! I am an instant gratification kind of girl. I don’t want to wait around with strips on my teeth or have to spend hours at the dentist office when I could be at a Pilates class, or having cocktails with my girlfriends. So, a treatment I could do myself on a weeknight while I was home watching The Vampire Diaries was immediately appealing. I loved how the stains seemed to magically disappear. I knew that if I could get a brighter smile immediately I would be soon be loving myself more and be off to meet up with the girls to show off my whiter smile. I know that when I feel confident I smile more and that attracts people to you. I definitely want men to think I’m open and happy, which is the kind of person I really am. But if I am feeling self-conscious about my teeth I am not going to be flashing my biggest smile. And I have been told I have a smile like a young Julia Roberts. A girl has to work everything she’s got, right?!
I also figure why spend more on going back for more. I want to pay once and get a total system. I know I am not giving up wine any time soon! So the staining will come back. Why not have the tools in my beauty arsenal to remove those stains as soon as they show up to ruin my good time?! I think the lighted toothbrush is a super cool technology and way more fast and efficient than sitting under a lamp at the dentist’s office, which frankly has a creepy smell and is plain old boring place to be. And any little product I can keep in my purse or makeup bag is always awesome. I have a lipgloss, small hairbrush, and little tube of mascara – why not a little mouth wash that actually fights stains as well as stinky breath?
I was definitely shocked to know that even though I brush and floss and am a good girl about oral hygiene I still could be having bad breath germs, which, hello, is gross, and definitely no bueno when it comes to dating and guys. So I immediately wanted to fix that problem and get the best product I could, and it was starting to seem like Malibu Bright could really offer me something different that would improve my health and appearance, both of which are important to me. I mean, you have your teeth forever. Think about that. I don’t want dentures like my grandma! LOL, JK.
The other surprising thing I learned about Malibu Bright is that lasting and superior tooth whitening is not all about bleaching. I figured it was all the same. I wasn’t aware that dental tooth bleaching could hurt. That is not ok. I don’t like pain, even for beauty. I think that having bleach in your mouth sounds like bad news. I would rather know I am using a more natural ingredient like the poly p you get with the Malibu Bright kit and even if I don’t exactly understand it, I know it is working on a molecular level so your natural white teeth come through and you don’t end up with very fake looking white teeth. It all started making sense and coming together for me.
So, guess what? After all that time spent reading the product review and watching the videos posted on Malibu Bright, I went ahead and actually got the stuff. I didn’t tell anyone, not even my roommate. I didn’t want my brother or my friends making fun of me for getting a product from the internet that didn’t work. I had to know for myself and if there was proof then I would feel proud for finding it, and if it didn’t I figured, no harm done. I set myself up with a fashion mag and cheesy tv and was all set to get into my Malibu Bright kit. Not entirely skeptical but not at all certain it would work like they said, either.
The first thing I have to report from the experiment is that The Malibu Bright kit is as tidy and fresh in person as it appeared online – very cool, professional stuff, at first glance. I set out all the separate tools and products, read the instructions, but honestly, from watching the video a few dozen times I was already acquainted with what I was getting and already knew what to do. I got to work!
I applied Poly(p) whitening gel and rinsed with the mouth wash, to get the full effect. I have to say I was expecting a very clinical, dental taste and was pleasantly surprised to learn that the flavor was freshening. My teeth were left feeling super slick and clean, like after a trip to the hygienist. My mouth felt fresh. I was getting excited. And then when I looked in the mirror, I was honestly floored. My teeth looked fantastic: healthy, fresh and shining. They didn’t look fake or bleached, just absolutely revitalized and glowing with youth. I should not have been surprised that my face seemed less aged. I looked brighter. And my smile really was dazzling. I was excited to meet my friends for brunch the next day.
The compliments were interesting. Like when you get a really great haircut or start getting toned by going to the gym, it was not immediately obvious that I had had my teeth “done.” My girlfriends each individually commented that I looked “refreshed” , “gorgeous”, and “had an inner glow”. I had to laugh, knowing my inner confidence was coming out, but that I had Malibu Bright to thanks. When I finally revealed my secret, my girlfriends let out a collective “of course!”, before they began pestering me for the name of my dentist.
